EXAMINATIONS

It is important for every woman to receive an examination from her OB/GYN at least once a year. The examination should include a Pap smear to check for abnormal cells on the cervix. Detected early, abnormal cells are easily treatable through a minor surgical procedure we can perform in our office. The examination should also include a breast examination. We encourage you to learn self breast examination and to examine yourself monthly. Women over 40 should receive scheduled mammograms every year, and a Hemoccult test to screen for colon cancer. These are part of our routine yearly Well Woman examinations.

Women considering pregnancy are encouraged to have laboratory testing to be sure they are immune to Rubella (German Measles) and are not carriers of the Cystic Fibrosis gene. We provide this service as well as elective preconceptional HIV testing as encouraged by the Surgeon General. We also will advise you of the need for supplemental Folic Acid which can help protect your baby from serious birth defects. Different people need different amounts of this essential B-vitamin.
