We are proud to be members of the Regional Physician Network, which consists of 113 of the finest physicians in the Spartanburg County area to serve you. As part of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, the network is integrated with the resources, experience, talents, and planning available to the finest healthcare system in the areas we serve. There are approximately 460,000 patient visits each year to our network. Visionaries, to give the best care to our geographic area, founded the network in 1994. There had never been an integrated group of different specialties joined by mission & design like this in our area. Physicians in the Spartanburg Regional Physician Network include family physicians, internists, OB/GYNs, gynecologists, geriatricians, pediatricians, orthopedists, gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, occupational medicine specialists, and emergency medicine physicians. Eight new physicians have been hired to begin this summer, and five of them are new residency graduates. We also have eight nurse practitioners in the network at our 34 practice sites. There are 450 employees serving these providers. Physician services are also provided to 30 nursing homes, with a total of 3500 nursing home beds. We have a comprehensive diabetes center, an urgent care center open seven days a week, and employee health for multiple businesses, including Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Westinghouse, and BMW. There is also a sports medicine program at our schools. We have in-house hospital physicians that we call Hospitalists. These physicians are specially trained internal medicine physicians who take care of critically ill patients for the family physicians and the specialists in the network. Spartanburg Regional Medical Center family medicine residents rotate through some of our offices and nursing homes with network physicians as preceptors. Our mission is to increase local community access to care. Examples include Chesnee, Landrum, Pacolet, Greer, Gaffney, and Rutherfordton, NC. We care for all people. We improve employee health and safety for over 800 companies in our occupational medicine program. We reduce illness by preventive care both through individual practice offices, and through special preventive programs. We reduce complications from chronic diseases as through our diabetes center. We reduce hospitalization through our network geriatric center and senior health intervention projects, which have made a great impact on the health of Spartanburg residents. We reduce emergency room waiting through our urgent care center. We have loose arrangements with other physicians who are not actually in the network but share management and physical facilities, including perinatologists, GYN oncologists, reproductive endocrinologists, neurologists, and others.
Our physicians can send patients to any local hospital, including Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Mary Black Memorial Hospital, Upstate Carolina Medical Center, Allen Bennett Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Greenville Hospital System, and Rutherfordton, NC. We have physicians that can care for patients at each place, although many physicians go to one hospital only.
Interesting facts about our network are that 92% of our physicians have renewed their contracts to stay in the network, which is exemplary. Thirty seven percent of our patients are Medicare, and five percent are Medicaid. The hospital business office is able to get a 95% collection rate for the past 12 months, which assures a successful business that will be in Spartanburg a long time. The network is running according to its business plan and is administered by five directors who manage our network and physician recruiting. A hospital system vice president heads the network.
While there are other networks in our geographic area, including those for Mary Black Hospital and St. Francis Hospital, we are much larger and more integrated, with our computer systems connected to the hospital. Because of the size and capabilities of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, we feel that we have a great advantage over the other networks in our area, although we do welcome physicians from the other networks to bring their patients to our fine hospital.
